EAPN Ireland is pleased to launch a new book, ‘Ireland and the European Social Inclusion Strategy: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead’. The book reflects on the progress made in tackling poverty and social exclusion in Ireland while also acknowledging that even at the height of Ireland’s economic success, there remained very significant problems for people at risk of poverty including access to services, low incomes and access to the labour market. The book also sets out a vision for a European Union that serves people and society ahead of powerful lobby groups and economics.

Twelve expert contributors – including representatives from civil society, academia, politics and the civil service – assess the impact of the European Social Inclusion Strategy in Ireland, and set out a roadmap for how European policy can be leveraged to tackle poverty at national level, leading to a fairer and more equal society.

Member Briefing: Responses to the Economic Crisis from TASC Roundtable

Those involved in anti-poverty work are well aware that economic issues are currently determining the boundaries placed on state responses to social exclusion. These same economic issues are restricting the possibilities and potential of community/NGO organisations in their work with marginalized groups. EAPN Ireland recently attended a very interesting roundtable, run by TASC, that looked at alternative responses to the economic crisis.

EAPN Ireland Publishes Report from Building Social Europe Conference

The European Anti Poverty Network (EAPN) organised an international conference in Dublin to further its vision for the legacy of the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, in the context of the EU’s priorities for the next decade. The objective of this conference was to present concrete proposals for building a social Europe with the capacity to end poverty and social exclusion, and make a real difference to the 85 million Europeans who live everyday at risk of poverty.

The conference set out to:

1. Take stock of the European Union’s contribution to ending poverty and social exclusion.
2. Take forward EAPN’s proposals for improving the social dimension of the EU 2020 strategy.
3. Provide an opportunity for a range of stakeholders, including people experiencing poverty,
to input on how the legacy of the Year should be realised.

Tackling the Economic and Social Crisis

There is an urgent need for the Government to identify and support sectors that have the potential for job creation and growth, according to a specialist Employment Working Group, coordinated by the European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland (EAPN). A position paper from the Working Group, entitled ‘Tackling the Economic and Social Crisis’ makes a series of recommendations that will stimulate employment and stem the flow of job losses across the country.
